IUI (Artificial Insemination)

 

Artificial insemination, or IUI, can be effective in the treatment of mild or moderate abnormalities in semen analysis (male factor), problems with completing sexual intercourse, hostile mucus (or other causes of an abnormal postcoital test), ovulation problems in conjunction with ovulation enhancing medications (such as clomid or menotropins), and female domestic partnership. 

 

Artificial insemination using IUI requires the collection of a sperm (semen) sample, washing the wash to remove the sperm from the semen, relocation of the sperm into an inert buffered medium (commonly a pH corrected human tubal fluid), and placement of the washed sperm into the uterus above the cervix using a (flexible plastic) catheter.

 

IUI procedures are relatively inexpensive (often $200-$400 in NJ), do not involve much risk (minimal bleeding or slight cramping are not uncommon), and usually do not hurt (often said to feel similar to a pap smear).
