laparoscopy for endometriosis

October 15, 2009 @ 04:21 PM — by info

When should one consider a laparoscopy for endometriosis?

Laparoscopy for endometriosis is a reasonable diagnostic and treatment option when a woman with suspected endometriosis suffers from either infertility or pelvic pain.

Laparoscopy is usually a day stay minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a thin lighted metal tube (laparoscope) that enters the abdomen through a small incision in the belly (usually near the belly button) to examine the organs of the abdomen or pelvis. Laparoscopy can explore for endometriosis, pelvic adhesions, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids and infections.

Surgical removal of endometriosis and repair of other pelvic problems can often dramatically improve a woman’s reproductive potential (fertility) and reduce her pelvic and lower back pain. Laparoscopy for endometriosis can often treat the problem completely and treating endometriosis generally does NOT require a large surgical incision (larger incisions are associated with more discomfort and longer recovery times).
