The semen analysis is a valuable diagnostic test for male infertility that is able to determine if the sperm produced within the semen (at ejaculation) has a normal appearance. Sometimes, the semen analysis is also said to be a “sperm function” test. When Kruger “strict morphology” is performed during a semen analysis, a normal finding of greater than or equal to 14% normal forms is said to suggest normal fertilization ability for the sperm (greater than 70% fertilization of available eggs at IVF) while an abnormal finding of less than or equal to 4% normal forms is said to suggest poor fertilization ability for the sperm (less than 8% fertilization of available eggs at IVF). In the experience of our office, the reliability of a semen analysis and strict morphology to determine the ability of sperm to fertilize an egg (sperm function) is low (cannot accurately predict function). 

In our offices the semen analysis costs 100 dollars. These basic analyses will determine (1) volume (the total ejaculate), (2) concentration (number of sperm per mL ejaculate), (3) motility (percentage of the total sperm that are moving), and (4) morphology (shape of the sperm) of the sperm. 

A semen analysis is a clinically useful and a relatively inexpensive test for male infertility. Our Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist will be able to use this information and consult with you to further discuss useful diagnostic tests and/or infertility treatments.
