Infertility is generally defined as greater than one year of unprotected intercourse without conception. With this definition, about one in five to one in six reproductive age couples in the United States are infertile. There has been increased public awareness of this problem, possibly due to increased media exposure, a greater willingness of couples to discuss these issues openly, and new developments in in vitro fertilization that have resulted in the birth of more miracle babies.
